2011 Margaret Stewart Lindsay Recipients

(June 2011) We are pleased to announce this year’s recipients of the Margaret Stewart Lindsay Arts Leadership Award, a program that encourages high school and collegiate musicians to give back to their communities.

Award recipients were invited to apply for funding for an existing or proposed music-based community project in the greater-Boston area. Awardees share a grant pool of $2000 and include:

Dan Felix, 17, of Kingston, MA, who has been raising money for the Kingston Intermediate School’s (KIS) afterschool music program, Joy of Music, and spreading awareness about the school’s decision to exclude band from the school-day curriculum due to budget cuts. The award will allow Dan to continue producing and selling CDs of his original songs to raise enough money to offset the cost of student participation in the Joy of Music program.

Muhan Zhang, a sophomore at Boston College and member of the Greater Boston Chinese Cultural Association(GBCCA) Ensemble. Muhan wants to build awareness and knowledge of Chinese music and culture by creating educational videos. These will include performances of the GBCCA as well as demonstrations of traditional Chinese instrument by members of the ensemble. The award will support the creation and dissemination of this media to new audiences.
